It’s funny how at times, you can look back over your life and see so clearly that it has a way of coming full circle; however, enroute, the path can take many twists and turns.
Here’s a bit about my journey…
After pursuing a business degree in college and dropping math 5 times, I was on the hunt for a major I could complete without “dropping out”. I loved cooking, home decorating, managing a household budget and was interested in nutrition. Some would say I was perfectly aligned for a MRS degree but found instead, the Home Economics department, and it was right up my alley. I was a domestic goddess! 1983, I graduated with a Home Economics Degree specializing in Food & Nutrition.
But you know how it goes, sometimes we have an idea about where we want to go and what we want to do and then life decides something different for us.
My first real job after college landed me in a retail store selling window blinds. After a short stint there, I became a manufacturers’ rep for a National Blind company. From there, I spent most of the next 20 years in the building industry.
What I loved most about what I did was being a problem solver. I was competent in my product knowledge and I helped architects create solutions for their projects. I was good at asking important questions, listening well and applying what I knew. It was rewarding to help people get the results they were looking for and I loved the one-on-one teaching aspect of my work.
How was I to know that I was actually being trained for a career that would one day feed my passion for making a difference in people’s lives?
I had incredible opportunities in the corporate world, opportunities that I’m very grateful for. But one day I decided I wanted more. I wanted something different; something that fed my soul. I had a yearning to find my true passion – so I decided to leave the corporate world and start my own business.
After exploring several ideas, my journey led me to the creation of a textile design business. Over time I created a vision for the company of inspiring beauty in people’s homes here, and empowering the lives of others in suppressed countries by providing fair-wage work opportunities, personal empowerment and a share of the profits. I was about to fulfill my greatest desire; to create a successful business and contribute to the less fortunate in the world at the same time!
Sadly, I was shocked to find that success in the corporate world didn’t guarantee success as an entrepreneur. I was challenged beyond anything I had ever known. The mounting stress was adding to health challenges I was starting to face and before long my health became my greatest challenge.
In early 2000 I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease. At the same time I was dealing with abnormal mammograms and bone density issues. I was scared. I had always believed I was invincible.
Although I was a natural athlete, I struggled with my weight for many years. I cherished ‘comfort’ food of the ‘baked’ variety. (Remember…I was a domestic goddess.) I loved to bake. But I also loved to eat. And for a while I could make up for really bad eating habits by exercising like a crack addict – until I couldn’t anymore.
I had reached a turning point. The days of my body’s ability to sustain itself under the harsh conditions I created for it ran out. Unhealthy eating, unmanaged stress and extreme exercise had finally taken its toll. That’s when I started on my healing journey…
Once I committed to a new path, it seemed as if miraculous new holistic information and resources began to show up to lead me. In retrospect it’s a little unbelievable how things began to unfold. I stumbled first into a deeply healing energy practice that incorporated yoga, meditation and other powerful restorative modalities. I immersed myself into those trainings and practices at a level that eventually led me to teaching.
Just a few months later, I was introduced to USANA Health Sciences, a company with an extraordinary reputation for the quality and effectiveness of their pharmaceutical grade vitamin supplements. These products became part of my daily regimen and I quickly committed to learning everything I could about these products and why they seemed to make a difference for so many people including myself.
It was then time to address the destructive eating habits I had been battling for years. My research led me to the concept of low-glycemic eating. This food plan worked for me and continues to today. Over the years I immersed myself in the education of this philosophy and in time discovered a transformative lifestyle organization with a foundation based on all the pieces I’ve come to know are critical for true health. The Healthy Edge is an organization founded on solid no-gimmick health principles. I was so impressed by the program and its approach that I became a certified coach in 2014.
For more than 15 years I’ve been committed to my own personal development journey, attending seminars, holistic retreats, high intensity-out-door training camps and workshops. It’s been an extraordinary journey; one filled with positive change and healing.
In the midst of my own journey I found myself at a juncture asking these questions:
• What if it was possible to create a life that was healthy, vibrant, fulfilling and inspiring?
• What would it look like?
• How would I feel?
• What would I be doing and who would I be doing it with?
• What if I could wake up each day and truly feel alive?
I couldn’t stop thinking about it – the seed was planted. I began to create my new life vision with words and pictures. I looked at every aspect of life that I valued and considered how it would look if I designed it from my heart and soul. I connected to my vision often and felt the feelings as if I was living it – and then I took a step. One and then another.
As I grew, changed and healed, and yes, I healed; (today, my body is free of the autoimmune disease, my mammograms have been normal for more than a decade and my bone density has increased,) I became crystal clear about my desire to help others. With my personal experiences to build on and an understanding of the challenges and potential for change; my desire for meaningful work started to crystalize. My passion for helping other’s restore their health and create lives they love became unwavering. I know how it feels to be inspired and empowered in defining what true health looks like for me and to design a life that I can’t wait to step into each morning. There is nothing like the experience of defining and creating your life from your own inspired vision. Together through the programs I coach and consult, that is what we do.
Over time, I’ve acquired a wealth of resources, practices and tools to support whole and vital living. They have created and continue to support my healthy and vibrant life. It’s been an extraordinary journey. Remember my reference to the circle of life? Who would have guessed I’d be using those college nutrition classes and many of the tools and experiences I’ve acquired along the way all these years later!
Today I live as an adventurer! I’m passionate about nature, the outdoors, hiking, backpacking, healthy cooking, traveling, gardening, health & fitness, personal growth, contributing, and creating wonderful experiences with family & friends. I’m grateful for the opportunity to share this crazy journey with the love of my life- my husband Jim (aka “Jimbo”).
